Summary

'It's impossible to read this without becoming ravenous!' -- Nigella Lawson

'It is as infectious as it is delicious, as funny as it is insightful。 The only reason to put this book down, is to go cook and eat from it' -- Heston Blumenthal

From award-winning actor and food obsessive Stanley Tucci comes an intimate and charming memoir of life in and out of the kitchen。

Before Stanley Tucci became a household name with The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games, and the perfect Negroni, he grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the table。 He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the recipes and into the stories behind them。

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about growing up in Westchester, New York, preparing for and filming the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia, falling in love over dinner, and teaming up with his wife to create conversation-starting meals for their children。 Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burnt dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last。

Written with Stanley's signature wry humour and nostalgia, Taste is a heartwarming read that will be irresistible for anyone who knows the power of a home-cooked meal。

Loved this book。 Really is a 4。5。 Loved his voice, his shameless name dropping, his recipes and the way he talked about his acting。 This book has it all -- love, death, children, Covid and of course, lots of delicious food。

I mostly loathed this but the recipes are so good it made it worth it

I must confess, I had no clue Stanley Tucci was such a foodie up until I picked up Taste。 The way he shares his life, especially the episodes revolving around food, is a delight to read。 Adding to the joy of Taste is Tucci’s command over the written word。 Like his acting, he is more than capable of connecting with the reader by sharing his feelings and emotions that ooze out of the pages。 A beautiful memoir that everyone should read, even if you are not a fan of his films – I am!

Stanley Tucci has a good sense of humour。

It’s always unfair/subjective to rate a memoir。 Yet, this was a clear 5 star read。 Well written, great pace throughout and made me HUNGRY。 Lovely and delightful。

Loved listening to the author read it。 Want to get the printed version so I can look at a couple of the simpler recipes

Stevie

I’m a big fan of Stanley Tucci but this missed the mark for me。

3。75-4。0 A must listen as Tucci brings so much vigor to his words and recipes。 I wish there had been a PDF with the audiobook to try the recipes。 Also, I think a bit of the name dropping and set stories could have been condensed。 I would not only classify this as a food memoir but a travel log。 My mom’s family is Italian and I also love food so I felt some of this deeply。 It also gives me hope when I hear people who have survived past their cancer。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Funny, entertaining read with lots of name dropping and clever, funny, (if not memorable), repartee。 Tucci talks about growing up in an Italian household, his first wife who died of cancer and his wife now。 He actually had a large tumor on his tongue and was not able to eat normally for a couple of years。Tucci narrates the audiobook, and he does a great job, but as the memoir is interspersed with a number of recipes, the reading of those was a bit tedious。

Wendy

Loved the book and Tucci’s sense of humor。 My only complaint is that it went by too fast!

Katherine

Stanley, can we have dinner??

Amy Sprenger

Loved, loved, loved。 Quick, funny read。 Will definitely be trying some of these recipes。 The story about his grandmother trying to give them money made me laugh out loud。 😊

Maree

An enjoyable autobiography with good at the center of life。 Some delicious family recipes

Heidi

This was great as an audiobook as Stanley tucci read it。 Was a sweet, snarky, slightly pretentious but in a funny way and heartwarming book about food and family。

Martin Kilkenny

Pretty good memoir and some great recipes。

Lynnea

I read many memoirs, this is among the top of my list of favorites。 It struck me as so profound the last five pages that I had to write some of it out in my notebook so I can remember exactly how it was written。

Julie Bouchonville

Wow what a great memoir ! Funny, moving, well paced, with a ton of humanity and elegance。 One of my favourite 2021 books, no doubt there。

Sarah

Clever, interesting, delicious sounding, funny。 Favorite chapter was “The Martini。” Made me laugh out loud with this line: Too many people say too many things and I wish they’d stop。

I've been on an audiobook memoir kick, and Stanley Tucci's Taste is the latest love of mine on that list。In this memoir, the charming, food-obsessed cookbook author and actor shares the stories behind his Italian-American culinary origins; his experiences starring in the food-focused movies Big Night and Julie and Julia; and varied food adventures from five-star meals to burned, inedible disasters。In Taste, Tucci shares his enthusiasm for Italian food, cooking processes, and gustatory exploration, and he revels in what feels like an almost sacred communal sharing of food。 I loved listening to his soothing voice extol the virtues of dishes that were familiar to me and many that were not--as well as listening to him relate various cooking sagas。But Taste is also a memoir。 The author shares stories of his wife and children, his first wife and her untimely death, and his own health crisis of cancer, which affected his digestion, ability to chew, and his taste--at the time, he was unsure how long-term the effects would be。 Food is interwoven through all of these shared stories, and it always feels natural, never a forced construct for the sake of the book。Listening to the author read his favorite recipes rather than reading them myself didn't leave me with the information I'd need to recreate anything, but I found it irresistible to hear Stanley Tucci calmly list ingredients, make a few corny-but-funny jokes, poke fun at himself or other cooks in his family, and relate his swirling, chopping, and estimating。 To see my full review on The Bossy Bookworm, or to find out about Bossy reviews and Greedy Reading Lists as soon as they're posted, please see Taste: My Life through Food。Find hundreds of reviews and lots of roundups of my favorite books on the blog: Bossy BookwormFollow me on Instagram! @bossybookwormblogOr Facebook! Funny and a comfort。 My family is from Sicily, so this felt like talking with a cousin。 Loved it!

This was a very enjoyable book。 I had seen Tucci's show, Searching for Italy, and just loved it。 I later heard him on Christopher Kimball's Milk Street as they talked about the book。I read most chapters individually so that I could really stay with that story。 They were fun and full of good memories, some recent and some from his childhood。The recipes he included were fun, too。 It's hard to walk away from the book without wanting to cook up a batch of pasta。I highly recommend the book for anyone This was a very enjoyable book。 I had seen Tucci's show, Searching for Italy, and just loved it。 I later heard him on Christopher Kimball's Milk Street as they talked about the book。I read most chapters individually so that I could really stay with that story。 They were fun and full of good memories, some recent and some from his childhood。The recipes he included were fun, too。 It's hard to walk away from the book without wanting to cook up a batch of pasta。I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in seeing the ways that food shapes our lives and who just wants to hear a little more from Stanley Tucci。 。。。more
